Most actors coming to Hollywood do not work as actors in their first year. I’ll repeat that so you can absorb this. Most new actors coming to Hollywood do not work as actors in the first year they arrive.
Again, there are always exceptions to any rule, but if you are a new actor, or bring no Broadway, Chicago or Regional Theatre experience with you, chances are you will spend your first year getting situated, finding classes and agents and managers and trying to figure out how to fit in. The trend in Los Angeles has always been toward youth. There, of course, is no right time to try to make it in Hollywood – everyone does it at their own pace and at the right time for them – but the younger the talent the better it seems. There are hundreds of acting jobs on the Disney Channel alone for young actors, not to mention acting jobs on network television and film. It is an industry that loves the “fresh” and the “new”. Everyone wants to discover the next big thing and when you arrive in Hollywood and get an agent and/or manager and start going out on auditions, you might get many in the same day. You will have to bring changes of clothes and change in office restrooms or your car and run from one part of the city to another. It can get very hectic, but it’s always exciting. When there is little time to prepare for these acting auditions, there are several easy techniques and tools to use to get the most out of each audition. There are ways to prepare for the audition whether you have thirty minutes or three days.

Beth Maitland has written about this subject in terms of what to wear to auditions in detail and we thought it was necessary to address how you take care of yourself. How you look. How you feel. What kind of shape you’re in.
The acting business accommodates a broad range of types and people. You are what you are and we encourage you to celebrate how you look, no matter what that is. You will be selling YOU. Know the product and don’t try to make it into something it can never be. Some people will always be character people. Some people are born with what society regards as “good looks” and they should celebrate that as well. We are not saying a good looking person can’t be a character or visa versa, it happens all the time.
