How to Prepare an Audition for a Soap Opera

There are a few things about auditioning for a Soap that are different than other types of dramatic auditions.  First of all, it is very important to know the material till it’s almost memorized.  Never read without a script, but always know your words exactly, and know the scene well.  In Daytime, there are no more cue cards or teleprompters as a rule, and you will be asked to learn an enormous amount of material per day if you are hired.  The producers and casting directors need to see that you are up for the job.  They need to see in your audition that you can get sides or the scene material and absorb the character and intent of the scene quickly and effectively.  They need to see more than anything else that you can digest lots of material with confidence. Auditioning for Soap Operas

Soap Opera auditions are a little different from many other television auditions, like comedy auditions for sitcoms, or dramatic auditions for hour long night time dramas, in terms of acting style.  Soap Operas are very specific.  The scene work is generally dramatic and serious, and very natural, but sort of heightened for camera shots, reaction shots, and dramatic “moments” where one actor is listening and responding nonverbally to the other.  It seems somewhat stilted, but it is part of the style of daytime. Audition Basics for Soaps

Soap opera actors jokingly refer to what they do every day as the Minute Rice School of Acting.  There is an enormous amount of material that must be learned and delivered competently on a daily basis, and the character and scene intentions must be clear and instant.  When auditioning for a Soap Opera, you must show that you are able to meet the challenge as an actor.
